How to get active on your day off
If you work a full-time job, it’s likely you only get a limited number of days off each year. This means that when you do book a day off, you’ll want to make the most of it. While some people may simply want to relax, others would rather get up and active in a bid to be productive and not waste the day away.
This doesn’t mean you have to hit the gym all day, though. There are a number of different ways in which you can keep fit and enjoy your day from the moment you wake up.
So if you’re looking for inspiration on how to spend your day off, why not try some of these?
Fuel yourself in the morning
The most important thing to do before you get active is to fuel yourself in the morning. This means ensuring you eat a hearty, healthy breakfast. While you might normally grab a quick snack on your way to work in the morning, your day off means you have plenty of time to cook yourself a proper meal.
Eggs are a rich source of protein, which will help to boost your energy levels for the day. Cook up an omelette and fill it with a combination of vegetables, such as spinach, peas and courgette. Sprinkle with some salt, pepper and a dash of paprika for that extra bit of flavour.
If you wish, accompany your omelette with a piece of sourdough or rye bread.
Stretch it out
Stretching before exercise is essential in order to loosen your muscles and reduce the risk of cramping. Muscles can feel tight after a long night’s sleep, so shaking off and stretching out will make you feel revitalised and ready to take on the day.
If the weather is nice, head out into your garden and stretch in the crisp morning air. Holding yoga poses is therapeutic and will help you to enter a period of calm and relaxation.
You could even listen to peaceful music, such as the sounds of the rainforest or waves in the sea.
Go for a run
To take advantage of the nice weather, put on your running shoes and go for a light jog or run.
Rather than running on the pavement next to a busy road, find a beauty spot in your local area – such as a park or a stream – and run there instead. You’ll find that your run is a lot more enjoyable when you can take in the stunning scenery at the same time.
Walk/cycle to the shops
You might like to spend your day off running errands and getting everyday tasks done that you don’t always have time for. This could be something as basic as getting groceries from the shops.
While you might normally hop in your car and drive to the local grocery, put your car keys down and walk or cycle there instead. If you’re concerned you’ll have too much shopping to carry home with you, invest in a shopping bag trolley with wheels or a basket for your bike.
Go swimming
Swimming is a great way of keeping active. Head to your local swimming pool or leisure centre and set yourself a goal of swimming a few lengths. If you have young children, take them along too. Most swimming pools host kid’s clubs and classes where your little one can get used to the water in a fun and stimulating way.
Look out for classes that are beneficial for you, too. Aqua Zumba is a great way of working your muscles and listening to some fun tunes at the same time.
